How to Set up a reliable PC

Last time, I wrote a post on 4 things to consider beforebuying a used laptop. After you must have got your laptop or desktop, whether new or used one, you still have to do some things to make sure it serves you well, such as choosing an operating system and installing the right software and applications. It’s important to make sure that your computer has all the necessary software it needs to serve the purpose for which you got it.

Good Operating System
The first thing to do after buying a new computer system is to install a good operating system if it doesn’t have one and you could also change the operating system if you don’t like it. People choose operating systems based on their fondness. Personally, I like Windows, especially Windows7 and Windows XP. I find it easy to use, it drivers are easy to find and install if not pre-installed, and windows supports all the software and applications I like using, all work on Windows. Any operating System you decide to use should be able to work with your favourite programs.

Strong Antivirus
After installing an operating system, before installing any program on your computer, you should install an antivirus. You can’t tell when you might unconsciously expose your PC to a threat, could be virus, worms, Trojans and so on. None of these is supposed to be on your PC, because, they could potentially damage your files and corrupt your operating system and crash your computer. The thing i hate the most about a virus is when it makes my computer annoyingly slow, I just hate it!

Antimalware
Antimalware programs are also very important and help detect malicious programs that manage to by-pass your antivirus program. It could be Ad-ware, Trojans, etc. There are so many antimalware programs that you can download from the internet, such as RoboSam or Malwarebytes.

Strong firewall software
With so many malwares and harmful programs out there, you need a very strong firewall program to help protect your system from being broken into by a hacker. A firewall program checks the information and data coming into your computer from a network or the internet and decides whether to block or allow them based on your firewall settings. A firewall will help prevent hackers and malicious softwares like worms from gaining access to your computer.

Media player
You will as well need to have a good media player that plays a wide range of media files .3gp, .wmv, .mp4, .avi, .flv and so on. I am fond of downloading videos from different websites. In order to play your videos conveniently, you need a reliable media player like VLC Media player.  VLC Media player, is an awesome media player

Download Manager
I’ve been using Internet download Manager for years now and I can say that download managers are cool. One of the things I’ve noticed with internet download manager is that the downloading speed is twice as fast as that of the web browsers. You can also download large files, pause and continue when there is a break in connection. It also helps you separate the media files from programs and compressed documents by creating different folders for each category within the download folder on your computer.

Word processor
You never can tell when you might need to prepare a document, could be notes or you just need to jot down some information on your computer, or if you are a blogger like me then you can’t do without Word processors. They help organise your articles and correct your errors. Examples of word processors are Microsoft office Word and Atlantis word processor

Image Editor
Image editors are one of my favourite programs. Adding a little touch of beauty to my pictures before I use them online or offline is just cool. Image editors can be used to crop, add text to pictures to resetting contrast, noising and other advanced forms of image editing. E.g  Adobe Photoshop, irfan view, etc.

Internet browser
There are so many internet browsers that you can download from the internet today. You need a browser to be able to surf the web. Most web browsers are free to download and use such as Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, flock and so on.

Also; Fast, Reliable Internet
After installing your programs, you also need to have a fast, reliable internet connection to keep your programs up to date, especially your antivirus and antimalware programs.
